Cuisinart Portable Tabletop Gas Grill

Not everyone needs a massive grill that’s big enough to host a block party, and not everyone has the space to store such a beast. For all of those folks, and for everyone who doesn’t have a lot to spend, there’s the area of gas tabletop grills. Today I am presenting you Cuisinart Portable Tabletop Gas Grill.

The Cuisinart CGG-180T Tabletop Gas Grill is a smaller grill, but still bit enough to cook about 6 chicken breasts at a time. It comes in three color schemes: black and silver, red with black and silver, and stainless steel and black. The manufacturer, Cuisinart, is known for home cooking goods and appliances.

It’s got 145 square inches of grilling space from its 9 inches wide and 16 inches grilling surface area. It takes a 16 oz camping size propane bottle, and produces 5,500 BTU on its stainless steel burner. The entire unit weighs 13.5 lbs.

The grill area itself is made out of porcelain enamel, so that it’s easier to clean. The drip tray on the bottom is spill resistant. The grill top is removable so that you can clean it, and even put it in the dishwasher. Because it’s propane, there really isn’t any ash to constantly scoop out.

The two legs on either side extend outwards to cook, but fold up smaller when storing the grill away. The grill also has a little locking lever to keep the grill lid shut and secure. The grill has a carrying handle.

From Box to Outdoor Table

When my gas grill box first arrived, I was initially concerned that the grill box actually just contained a bunch of parts that I would have to assemble and put together myself. I wasn’t sure how I felt about a cooking appliance that I had to assemble or whether I even had the right tools for it. I was so relieved to find that wasn’t the case!

What’s in the box is the fully assembled grill, they just ask that you move the feet into position, along with the handle. These two assembly steps were pretty intuitive all on their own. They seem like purely a space saving measure to help keep the box size and packaging carbon footprint lower.

Starting up the Cuisinart Grill

Turning the grill on was pretty intuitive, I just had to slowly turn the very big knob in the front of the grill. My hearing is excellent, so I could hear a tiny click sound as the gas ignited. I imagine that if someone is hard of hearing, they would just have to turn the knob until they saw the flames.

Cooking Food

The grill heated up quickly and I could feel with my hand how the heat was evenly distributed throughout the cooking surface, even around the corners. I cooked some chicken with ease and didn’t have any problems. I did notice that it tends to flare up a little if drippings fall to the bottom of the grill, but I wasn’t bothered by it as that’s to be expected from every grill, and it doesn’t really affect the cooking of your food.

How much space that the grill surface has

I felt that the quantity of food that the box claims that you can fit on the grill surface is either over-inflated or that they used very small portion sizes. If you cut all of the box claims in half, that’s about what it can actually cook. So the box says that you can fit 8 steaks, 8 hamburgers, 6 chicken breasts, and 4 lbs of fish, but really it’s more like 4 8 oz steaks, 4 chicken thighs with leg, 4 chicken breasts, or 4 1 lb to 1.5 lb salmon steaks.

Propane canisters and the canister life

Because of the special handling procedures involved with the flammable gas propane, manufacturers aren’t really able to ship propane in boxes with products as part of a kit. But you can still buy propane at most grocery stores, hardware stores, and gas stations. Sometimes a store might throw a grill and propane together as a special store offered deal.

I’m not a grilling enthusiast, but I do like to use my grill every now and then. Based on how much propane I used cooking, I would suspect that if I grilled between once every week and once every two weeks, I might go through a 16 oz propane canister about once every 2 months.

But how much propane the grill uses is really dependent on who is cooking. I like to cook things fast and quick, and I shut off the grill immediately when I’m done cooking. But my spouse likes to take things slow, cook at a lower heat, and leaves the grill on while he is eating.

Cleaning the grill after cooking

Some ovens have a setting where you can turn the oven on the highest temperature, close the door, and it will cook and burn away everything on the inside. But you absolutely do not want to do that with this grill – you will simply burn and char the inside of this device beyond use, and it will be ruined.

To clean my grill, I just wiped down the inside. Then I took the drip tray and porcelain cooktop inside and sponged them down with soap and water. After they air dried, I put them back inside the grill and it was all ready to go again.

Who is this Grill for?

Everyone has different needs, but I feel this grill will work very well for you if you:

  • Have a smaller grill budget
  • Want a portable grill
  • Go many places, such as parks, beaches, or camping
  • Live in an apartment
  • Have a tiny backyard
  • Live in extreme temperatures so that it is difficult to reach the grill and endure the weather to cook
  • Family size of 1 to 4
  • Don’t like charcoal or wood grills

Cases where this grill wouldn’t be a good purchase for you

This grill is not for people who want to grill indoors, and you’d need a special type of grill for that. I felt that this grill also doesn’t do well for people who want to cook a lot of food all at once, say a family that cooks a lot of food during the weekend to last them all week, because of the limited surface area.

Final Thoughts

I enjoyed my time with Cuisinart portable tabletop gas grill and I had no problems with it. It seems like the perfect size for a single person, a married person, or someone who only has a few children. I like this grill and I will be recommending it to my friends.
